UFC 81: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will take on Tim Sylvia for the Interim Heavyweight Title

During last night’s UFC 79-Nemesis event, there was an announcement that thrilled most of us here at UFC Fight.com.  There were some speculations this past month of Tim Sylvia possibly fighting Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira now that Randy Couture made it clear that he wasn’t coming back into the octagon any time soon.  Due to this, Dana White was pretty much forced to have the heavyweight title vacant and have two contenders battle it out for the belt.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1) will be officially facing Tim Sylvia (24-3-0) at UFC 81-Breaking Point.  The Super Bowl weekend fight card looks to be shaping up with another bout added to the event.  Already on the card is the UFC debut for the former WWE superstar Brock Lesnar who will take on the former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir.

Nogueira fought Heath Herring at his UFC debut in the summer of 2007 and was able to sneak in a win via a unanimous decision.  He has won 6 of his last 7 fights before coming into this next bout.  Expect the best of Nogueira on February 2nd as he’ll be sure to fight his heart out for that interim title.

The former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia lost his title to Randy "the Natural" Couture at UFC 68 earlier this year.  After losing the title to the Natural, he quickly bounced back to defeat Brandon Vera via a unanimous decision at UFC 77-Hostile Territory.  Tim was eager to fight Randy in a goal to attain the belt that was taken away from him.  Although it’s not the way he wanted to, Tim will still have a chance to get that title again when he faces Nogueira next year at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, in Nevada.
