A lightweight title unification fight between Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson (16-2) and interim champion Gilbert Melendez (16-2) is set to headline the upcoming Strikeforce ‘Evolution’ event on December 19th. The event will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
The five-round bout is perhaps one of the most anticipated rematch wars in MMA history, featuring two great warriors who have agreed to fight in the cage for the lightweight title. The first time both fighters met, Thomson took home the Strikeforce title with scores of 50-45 on all three judges’ cards. An April 11 booking was scrapped after Thomson suffered an ankle injury during training. They were later scheduled to fight again on August 15 at the Strikeforce ‘Carano vs. Cyborg’ event, but that bout was cancelled because Thomson wasn’t medically cleared.
The time has finally come, so make sure to mark it on your calendars as we expect yet another great Strikeforce fight card come December 19.
