Jake Shields to the UFC?

Jake Shields is a free agent and he is still looking around for a new MMA home.  Shields last fought with Renato Verissimo at EliteXC’s Uprising on September 15th and was able to put him away via TKO-strikes in the first round.  With a superb 19-4-1 record, Dana White may be interested in signing up the Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu fighter.

Here’s a short piece of an interview with Jake Shields:

Question: Your contract status?

Jake Shields: This is the last fight on my contract. They offered some more fights but I’m letting my manager handle that.

Question: Who is your manager?

Jake Shields: Right now my Dad is actually my manager.

Question: What do you think of 2008?

Jake Shields: I want to go out there and fight the best. I’m really looking at
UFC over Elite because that is where a lot of top guys are. In the next
few weeks I’ll probably make my decision on where I’m going to be
signing.

Question: Should we say you are ‘in talks now’ or ‘have talked to’
UFC?

Jake Shields: Have been in the past. I’m sure we’re going to talk
to them in the next week before we sign anything with Elite. I’m ready to
get in there with the top guys. With the Rumble on the Rock tournament and
EliteXC and my last four or five fights have been top come and have been fast,
easy fights. I think it definitely shows I belong there.

Question: Isn’t this about where you were last year? Better
positioning now but still taking offers?

Jake Shields: Yes, same situation but the money is going up good and
I’m getting a lot more exposure. Now I just want to go and fight the best
guys out there and see what happens. Nothing has changed that much.
