UFC 79: It’s finally on between Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva; Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Tim Sylvia?

That’s right, Chuck Liddell will finally face Wanderlei Silva  at UFC 79 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  In one of the most anticipated fights in mixed martial arts history, both fighters will finally meet in the octagon tonight to settle this trash talk once and for all.

Chuck and Wandy are coming off a 2-fight losing streak.  Most people feel that this fight will be extremely crucial for both men as it can decide their future in the UFC.   We have to remember that both of these guys have been champions for years in their weight class.  Wandy was the former middleweight (205 lbs.-considered light heavyweight in the UFC) champion at PrideFC as he went on a 20-fight unbeaten streak from 1999-2004.  Out of the 20 bouts, he won 18, attained a draw against Mirko Cro Cop and a "no contest" versus Gilbert Yvel.  He even went on to win the Pride 2003 middleweight Grand Prix.

Chuck became the UFC light heavyweight champion (205 lbs.) in 2002 and defended his title until he faced Randy Couture in June of 2003.  Chuck was able to bounce right back and defeat a few opponents before facing Couture in one of the biggest UFC rematches in 2005.  Chuck remained undefeated thereafter until he was stopped by the current light
heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson.

This battle will be relatively important for the former champs.  Both men have been training hardcore for this fight, so expect an exciting bout tonight.  There are also speculations of a huge announcement tonight.  Rumors throughout the internet state that Dana White will be announcing the heavyweight title match-up between Tim Sylvia and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.  Couture doesn’t seem to have plans on returning to the octagon, which has practically forced Dana White to have a vacant title.  We’ll just have to see what will happen tonight in the last event of the year for the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
