UFC Fighter Chael Sonnen Tests Positive For PEDs Following UFC 117 Loss Against Anderson Silva

UFC no. 1 middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PED’s) after his UFC 117 title fight against Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva.   According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Silva which was held on August 7th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Sonnen was scheduled for an immediate rematch against Silva, aimed for February 6, 2010 in Las Vegas.  As of now, we are not sure what sort of actions will be taken by the UFC.  Their rematch bout could possibly be delayed or scrapped due to this unfortunate news.  Sonnen could also be facing a 1-year suspension, sidelining him from any form of MMA competition.

Anderson Silva’s Manager Ed Soares shared his thoughts on Sonnen testing positive for PED’s:

“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him.  I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night it is just a shame it will be tarnished.”
