UFC 79: BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk or Joe Stevenson?

The battle of the lightweights is coming real soon as Dana White stated that it would most likely occur at UFC 79.  Now that BJ Penn was able to avenge his loss with Jens Pulver, he was given the opportunity to win a title bout.   He is still waiting patiently for his next opponent as it has not been decided just yet.

Unfortunately, we really don’t know right now if Sean Sherk (the current Lightweight champion of the UFC) will be able to defend his title in December as he tested positive

for steroids at UFC 73-Stacked (results and pics).
He had appealed the day he was accused of taking steroids as he
disagreed with the results and his case was then moved to a later
date.  The final results for his steroid tests and the decision of the
California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), will most likely be
decided by October 31st.  If Sherk avoids suspension and is allowed to
continue defending the belt, we will probably see him face BJ Penn.

However, if Sherk is suspended, Penn will most likely face Joe
Stevenson.  Stevenson is prepared to fight for the UFC Lightweight
title and this is what he said:

“I was told I was definitely fighting in December or January. I think there’s a strong possibility I’ll face B.J. Penn.”
