Dana White On St. Pierre: “If He Beats BJ Penn, He’ll Fight Thiago Alves”

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (GSP) is focused solely on BJ Penn as he prepares for his rematch bout set to take place on January 31, 2009.  While both of these fighters concentrate on a very important task, UFC president Dana White must also look ahead at possible future match-ups.

Dana White has been approached with several scenarios like what if GSP beats Penn, who would GSP fight next?  Or what if Penn beats GSP in this upcoming rematch, who would Penn face next?  However, Dana White finally answered some of our questions with mmaweekly and this is what he had to say:

"If he (Georges St. Pierre) beats BJ Penn, he’ll fight Thiago Alves.  And then, if he beats Thiago, maybe we’ll start talking about (St. Pierre and Anderson Silva) meeting at a catch weight fight or GSP going right to 185 and fighting…he’s (Thiago Alves) next in line for a title shot.  If GSP beats BJ Penn, then (Thiago Alves) fights GSP.  If BJ Penn wins, then he (Thiago Alves) fights BJ.  And then he’d have to defend that title for a while before I let him move up and try to fight Anderson (Silva)."

What many may begin to wonder is where Kenny "Kenflo" Florian from the lightweight (155 pounds) division will stand if BJ defeats GSP.  After all, White did say that the winner between Joe Stevenson and Kenny Florian would be the next challenger in the lightweight division.  We’ll just have to patiently wait to see how things unfold.
