Dana White Announces Wanderlei Silva vs. Chuck Liddell for UFC 79-Nemesis

During a Spike TV presentation called "Scream 2007," Dana White announced the dream match we all wanted to see and it is finally official.  Wanderlei "the axe murderer" Silva will be taking on Chuck "the Iceman" Liddell on December 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  What better way to end the year then to have two MMA veterans battle it out in a fight many of us have been dying to watch for a very long time.

Wanderlei signed earlier this year with the UFC and was expected to immediately fight Chuck in a war of all wars at UFC 76.  However, things started to change as Wanderlei wanted to postpone his first fight in the UFC for November because he was still in the process of moving from Brazil and into the United States.  Due to this, Chuck would face Keith Jardine at UFC 76 and Wanderlei would wait for the Iceman on a later date.

Unfortunately, Chuck lost his fight to Jardine via a split decision and our hopes for the dream match between Wanderlei and Chuck seemed to move further and further away.  Nontheless, Dana White felt that it was finally time for these two guys to fight as both contenders are coming off back to back losses.  Chuck has lost to Keith Jardine and Quinton Jackson while Wanderlei has lost to Mirko Cro Cop and Dan Henderson.  Both fighters will look to come back stronger than ever, ignoring the past and concentrating on their future MMA careers.  This isn’t just another fight, this is the bout that both fighters have been hungry for…the war of the Light Heavyweights!

The UFC 79-Nemesis fight card is already taking shape with 2 must-see bouts.  Also on the card is Matt Serra as he looks to defend his welterweight title for the very first time when he faces UFC veteran Matt Hughes.  Make sure to look back on our UFC Events section as we will post the rest of the matches for UFC 79 very soon.
