CBS Fight: Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson

ProElite has announced that Kimbo Slice will be taking on James Thompson on May 31st in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential center.   This will be the first EliteXC presentation on national television now that they have signed a deal with CBS.

Kimbo Slice is known worldwide for his street/backyard fights that he and his team would organize in the neighborhoods of Miami, Florida.  There were videos all over the internet where he fought random people that decided to challenge him just for fun.  Youtube and other video websites had the fights up and it wasn’t until CFFC (Atlantic City based MMA organization) paid him to fight during a mixed martial art event.

Kimbo’s first fight came against a former WBO heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, Ray "Merciless" Mercer.  Mercer was 46 when he took on Kimbo at the CFFC 5 event.  Just when we all thought he would box it out with Mercer, Kimbo took him down immediately and then submitted him via a deep guillotine choke.

The win helped Kimbo gain even more fame, which then convinced Gary Shaw (President of EliteXC) to try to ink some deal with the internet fighting superstar.  Kimbo had his first fight against Bo Cantrell, who proved to be no match for the Miami monster.  Many believe that Kimbo still hasn’t been put to the test against an experienced MMA fighter.  We’ll be looking to see if he can stand up with the very powerful James "The Colossus" Thompson.

James "The Colossus" Thompson (14-8-0) is a former Cage Rage/PrideFC MMA fighter who has fought very tough fighters from all over the world.  Thompson has tons of experience when it comes to MMA, having notable fights against Aleksander Emelianenko, Kazuyuki Fujita, Hidehiko Yoshida, Don "The Predator" Frye and many more.  However, Thompson is also well-recognized for having the weak chin, losing  3 of his last 4 fights by way of knockout.   We’ll just have to wait until May 31st to see what kind of a fight these guys are going to bring us.

On that same fight card, UFC veteran Robbie "Ruthless" Lawler will be taking on Scott Smith for the middleweight championship belt.  More on the CBS Fight event will be posted once we’re informed.
