UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is coming off a huge win over Chael Sonnen at UFC 148. His training camp reported that Silva is willing to step back into the Octagon sometime soon, but it would have to be against a very well known opponent who had several UFC wins under his belt.
In a recent interview with Silva’s management, they share their thoughts on possible future opponents. Although many MMA fans believed that Chris Weidman is a well deserved opponent after his dismantling of Mark Munoz at UFC on FUEL TV 4, his management highly disagrees. They go on to talk about why UFC newcomer and former Bellator middleweight champion who’s won 24 of his last 25 MMA fights (one being a Draw) would be far from being a no. 1 title contender as well. Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold was their top choice as an opponent the camp was very interested in.
FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” reports the following:
“One of Anderson Silva’s managers said that one of the issues with Hector Lombard is he thinks he needs at least three more impressive wins in the UFC. He said that 85 percent of UFC fans don’t even know who Hector Lombard is, who is of course making his Octagon debut on Saturday night.”
“As for Chris Weidman, he said, ‘Well, there’s another great unknown fighter.’ He doesn’t see those match ups as being money making pay-per-view events.”
“He did mention Luke Rockhold, who is the Strikeforce middleweight champion. Alas, Rockhold is contractually tied to Strikeforce, so that fight’s not happening. We’ll have to wait and see, but right now, the Anderson Silva camp not too excited about the options out there.”
The winner between Michael Bisping and Brian Stann at UFC 152 could also be a worthy opponent for Silva, depending of course on each of their performances.
