The Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair “Demolition Man” Overeem is just about ready to fight the no. 1 heavyweight in the world, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko. Overeem has won six of his last seven fights, with just one of his bouts ending in a “no contest” decision (against Mirko Cro Cop at DREAM 6 due to knees to the groin). His most recent win was a 33-second submission victory over Josh Thompson by way of a guillotine choke at DREAM 12.
Fedor will be taking on the undefeated Brett “The Grim” Rogers as part of the November 7 Strikeforce main event. A victory for Fedor would put him either next or very close to a Strikeforce title shot. During the DREAM 12 post-fight press conference, the “Demolition Man” said he would be ready to fight Fedor in April of 2010.
From Alistair Overeem:
“I want you to write this down: Alistair Overeem wants to fight Fedor, April 2010. So write that down. (Asked where he wants the fight to take place) I don’t care. Maybe in DREAM, maybe in Strikeforce. I don’t care — rather in DREAM but Strikeforce is also OK.”
