Zuffa LLC (parent company of UFC and WEC) has made a contract renewal with the Versus channel after Direct TV (satellite television company) dropped them from its current line-up. The multi-year deal includes seven live WEC events and two live UFC events for 2010.
Snip from the Versus Network:
ShareAs part of VERSUS’ renewal deal, the network will air seven live WEC fights and two live UFC events in 2010, marking the first time that live UFC events will air on a national sports cable network. Also included in the renewal deal are digital media rights, giving VERSUS.com the ability to air one non-televised fight and behind-the-scenes footage from each live WEC Event. Details regarding when the first live UFC event will air on the network will be announced in the near future.
Frank Mir Prefers Watching WEC Lightweights Over TUF 10 Heavyweights

The current WEC commentator and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir talks about how boring it was to watch episodes of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ season 10. Mir feels that lightweight MMA fighters are way more competitive and exciting than those of any heavyweight fights.
From Frank Mir:
Share“[In regards to The Ultimate Fighter Season 10] I don’t even know what’s going on, I had to turn it off. I’m being serious. It was bad. Some of the fights were horrible. I haven’t seen any fights in the WEC that could ever amount to being that bad, because the lighter guys are just more competitive. They’re in shape, they’re more strategic. Even when you go to a college wrestling match, typically, the heavyweights are boring to watch…. I’m a heavyweight and I’m saying… (the fights are) nowhere near as exciting as the lightweights.”

From WEC Vice President Peter Dropick:
Brazil is home to some of the most legendary fighters in the history of our sport. We are confident that WEC fighters like Jose Aldo, Wagnney Fabiano, and others can carry on the legacy that started with Hall of Famers like Royce Gracie.
From Globosat’s Armando Augusto Nogueira:
ShareMMA is attracting more Brazilian fans each day. That’s why Combate offers, besides UFC, another great event of this sport, WEC.

From WEC President Reed Harris:
Share“When we decided to focus on the lighter weights we knew we had our work cut out for us. But if you look at boxing for example, it took many yeas, but now the lightweight guys are the guys everybody is interested in. If you look at the time frame, I only started really focusing on the light weights about eight months ago. Now look where we are at. Everyone in the MMA industry says the best lightweights in the world fight for WEC. I get calls from across the world, from Japan, from Korea, from Brazil, with coaches saying ‘I’ve got lightweight fighters we want to bring into the WEC, because these guys want to fight the best.’ It used to be the other way around. We used to have to chase after them. Obviously we’ve got guys like Miguel (Torres), Brian Bowles, Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, and Jose Aldo. We’re starting to build this huge list of guys that people are interested in. I know if we do a pay-per-view I am going to have to have a completely stacked card. Deeper than anything I’ve ever done. And it’s going to have to be fights people want. I watched the Countdown show the other day. Once the fans understand the fighters and what the fight is about, then you just gotta watch.”

ShareDirectTV Drops The Versus Channel, Which Stops Airing WEC Events

So DirectTV stops airing the Versus channel, while several cable providers stop airing HDNet. Unfortunately, MMA fans just can’t win with any of these cable companies. Can’t we all just get along and have any channel we want with any cable provider we choose to have in our homes?!!
Here’s what DirectTV reps had to say:
Share“Our contract with Comcast expired August 31 and we were unable to reach agreement on a renewal. Comcast was not only demanding renewal terms that did not reflect market value for the channel but also demanding carriage terms that were discriminatory. Comcast forced us to drop Versus unless we agreed to their unreasonable terms.”
