UFC vs Strikeforce

The UFC is ready for another counter programming attack this Saturday night as they are set to televise some UFC 100 bouts on Spike TV while the Strikeforce ‘Carano vs. Cyborg’ event is aired on Showtime.  This isn’t the first time the UFC has done this, but it definitely seems to work their way.  Statistics have shown really good ratings during nights that the UFC have used their counter programming techniques.  The Zuffa goal is to pretty much push average fans away from non-UFC events even though they may deny it.

Here’s what you’ll see on August 15 at 10pm ET on Spike TV:

UFC 100 presents…

  • Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
  • Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping
  • Alan Belcher vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
  • Stephan Bonnar vs. Mark Coleman
  • Jon Jones vs. Jake O’Brien
  • Shannon Gurgerty vs. Matt Grice

GSP afterparty

GSP afterparty 2

Thiago “The Pitbull” Alves personally came up to Georges St. Pierre to congratulate him for his victory at UFC 100.  Although Alves lost to GSP via a unanimous decision, both fighters showed no bad blood between each other after the bout.  GSP was surprised with Alves’ appearance during his afterparty, but showed much respect for the Pitbull by stating that he was a “class act and a real professional.”

Jon Fitch also won that night with a unanimous decision win over  Paulo Thiago.  Although GSP defeated Fitch not too long ago, he too appeared over at GSP’s party to celebrate their UFC 100 wins.  GSP talks about how drunk he got during his afterparty and the reunion he had with fighters he had the pleasure of beating in the past.

Snip from Georges St. Pierre during his UFC 100 post-fight victory celebration:

“The [day after UFC 100] I went at a pool party at Rehab with all my friends who came to support me. I drank so much that I forgot my whole name. It was very cool because at one time, Thiago Alves showed up with his entourage and came in my booth (cabana) and drinking with me and congratulate me for the fight. I thought he was a class act and that prove that he was a real professional athlete and a real good person and a gentleman. John Fitch showed up as well, and we celebrate together our victories. Shonie Carter came a little bit later with a gold speedo and a hat and a cane dressed like a pimp with his cane. He make us laugh very much and as always me and Shonie had a great time because Shonie is a good old friend of mine. We had an amazing time at Rehab then I came back to my hotel…took a little nap of one hour and went back to a club at night called Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel. I drank so much that I couldn’t sleep at night. I took my plane the following Monday – when I got on the plane…I think I was still drunk. People who know me know that I can’t sleep on the plane, because I’m always afraid of flying, but the fact that I was drunk helped me out controlling my fear.”

Yoshihiro Akiyama Talks About His UFC 100 War Against Alan Belcher

Yoshihiro Akiyama

Yoshihiro Akiyama spoke about his UFC 100 war against Alan Belcher and says the only reason he won was because he “REALLY didn’t want to lose the fight.”  According to Sexy-Yama, the hit he received below the waist in the first round truly affected him throughout the rest of the fight.  However,  the Judo expert kept his composure and let the fight go on.  He admits that Belcher was indeed “the toughest fighter” he has ever faced in his mixed martial arts career.

As Akiyama was taken care of at the hospital after the fight, the Japanese superstar was informed by Dana White himself that he and Belcher had won the “Fight of the Night” bonus.  A great debut for the young Akiyama as he acquired his first win in the octagon including an additional $100,000 USD bonus to add to his purse.

Snip from Yoshihiro Akiyama himself:

“Alan (Belcher) was a very tough fighter. The damage of the low blow in the beginning of the fight was quite strong. I thought that if he hit me there again I wouldn’t be able to continue the fight. I wanted to take a large break but there was confusion during the fight. I misunderstood the referee saying five minutes in English as five seconds, I continued the fight urgently but this took a big toll on the exhaustion of my physical strength. My eye got injured when I got downed on the first round by a left. I felt an abnormality in my eye after the end of the 1st round. One eye was closed so I didn’t know about my sense of distance. Because I couldn’t see any attacks from my opponent’s right side I received a lot of leg kicks from that side. I didn’t continue with the game plan, the only reason I won was my feeling that I really didn’t want to lose this fight. After the fight when I was in the hospital, Dana White came personally and told me first hand that me and Belcher’s fight was elected as the fight of the night. I was very happy…. Alan is the toughest fighter I have faced and I’m proud to have been able to fight him. I will devote myself from now on so please support me.”
