King Mo Lawal Comments On Fine Received For Victory Celebration In His Strikeforce Fight Against Whitehead

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal was victorious this past Saturday night in his Strikeforce ‘Evolution’ fight against Mike Whitehead.  Immediately after he knocked out Whitehead, he celebrated by opening up two cans of Rockstar energy drinks.  He proceeded to recreate the pro-wrestling great “Stone Cold” Steve Austin post-fight drinking scene, where Austin smashed two Budweiser beers together, poured some of the beer in his mouth and would then spill the rest of it over himself and the ring.  The California State Athletic Commission wasn’t too thrilled with the victory celebration, fining King Mo a total of 10% of his $20,000 USD purse.

“Someone told me, ‘You got fined.’ I was like what? Fined by who?  I told Strikeforce. I figured that everybody knew. I think it probably had to do with the huge uproar because everybody was like, ‘Mo’s unsportsmanlike,’ and their corny a** bulls***. They don’t want to see me have fun and what not. They think this is the NFL…I’m not sponsored by Rockstar. The thing is, I couldn’t have any other beverage in the ring. If I could have, I would have had Pepsi. But Rockstar is cool, they are the sponsor for Strikeforce, I have a lot of respect for Strikeforce so I just did it. Why not? I was just out there having fun…I didn’t splash the mat with the drink. The drink exploded when I opened it because someone shook it up…As far as people saying, ‘Yeah, Mo got the mat slippery on purpose.’ Let me telling you something, you idiots: the canvas is slippery anyway. If I get Rockstar on the mat and it dries up, I’m doing them a f***ing favor, you know what I’m saying? It irritates me when people run their mouths and sh**. They always say the dumbest sh** ever and they don’t know sh** about what’s going on…I didn’t know that you can’t jump on the cage anymore. I had no idea…I tried to, but they were like, ‘Get down! Get down!’ So I got down, and the guy beside me was like, ‘Calm down,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I am. I’m going to go to my corner real quick, I’m going to get some towels and do it over a towel…It’s whatever, man, because you know what? I don’t care if they show it or not because I just do it for me. If I’m having fun and if people there are having fun … if they want to see my entrances, they need to fly to a Strikeforce event and buy a ticket.”

Melendez Not Looking Forward To Third Fight Against Thomson, Feels They Can Beat Anyone In UFC and DREAM

Strikeforce lightweight fighter Gilbert Melendez defeated Josh Thomson this past weekend Strikeforce’s lightweight title unification.  The Mexican-American warrior won via a unanimous decision as part of the Strikeforce ‘Evolution’ co-main event.  What a good way to end the year as both Melendez and Thomson provided one of the most action-packed brawls of 2009.

Thomson was victorious the first time they met back in June of 2008, but Melendez bounced back with tremendous heart and effort this time around.  When asked if he’d do it all over again to untie their score, he said he was comfortable with calling it even.

“Now that we got our stuff done with, it’s up to us to prove we’re the best 55ers. Me and him are badass. I think me and him can take out all the dudes in UFC and all the dudes in DREAM. It’s about the respect. We can beat a lot of those guys. We’re complete MMA fighters. A lot of guys aren’t…. There’s gonna be a third one, huh? I’m not looking forward to it. I left my heart out there. I don’t know if they showed it on TV but I puked a little bit afterward. I think we put on a great show. I‘m cool with calling it even.”
