Gegard Mousasi On Fighting King Mo On April 17 For Strikeforce, Talks Possibility of Signing With UFC

The former DREAM middleweight champion and current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi talks about his upcoming April 17 title defense bout against ‘King Mo’ Lawal.  Mousasi admits that King Mo is a very good wrestler, but he believes that his MMA experience will help him throughout the fight.

The Armenian MMA fighter and professional kickboxer also talks on the possibility of signing with the UFC once his Strikeforce contract is complete.  He also mentions the fact that his next career goal would be to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

From Gegard Mousasi:

“[King Mo's] good. He’s experienced — not as experienced as a fighter as I am, but experienced with wrestling. He’s the opponent I’ve been asking for, he’s a dangerous opponent and it’s a good fight … I’m the champion and he’s the challenger, but I think his wrestling experience is big: He’s been competing for a long time. I’m not taking him lightly. I’m more experienced in MMA but I’m not thinking that I’m a better fighter than him. I’m very happy with Strikeforce. I enjoy being part of the team. I may sign with the UFC after Strikeforce but there’s really no reason for me to go. I’ve been treated very well, both in Strikeforce and in Dream, and I’m very happy where I am … Would I fight good fighters in UFC? Yes, that would be a good challenge, but I’m not going to say I want to fight [those guys] because that’s not a possibility. They’re in a different organization. I’m really not thinking about fighting them. I’m only thinking about fighting King Mo … I was champion in Dream at middleweight, I’m champion in Strikeforce at light heavyweight, and my final goal is to be heavyweight champion of the world.”

Gegard Mousasi vs King Mo Lawal For Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title On CBS In April

Gegard Mousasi and King Mo Lawal have both signed an agreement to fight each other for the Strikeforce light heavyweight title.  The championship bout is scheduled for Strikeforce’s April 17 event, airing live and free on national television- on CBS.

The former DREAM middleweight champion Mousasi continues to add on victories to his record, winning his last 15 bouts including the Strikeforce title when he defeated Babalu Sobral in August of 2009.  The Dutch-Armenian MMA fighter is set to put his belt on the line for the very first time against undefeated King Mo Lawal.  King Mo is a former three-time U.S. Senior National Wrestling Champion and a former NCAA National collegiate wrestling Champion.

The fight between Mousasi and Lawal will be part of the co-main event for the upcoming Strikeforce show in April, headlined by middleweight champion Jake Shields who will be looking to defend his title against Dan ‘Hollywood’ Henderson.

Rumors of Talks Between M-1 Global and UFC To Obtain Fedor and Mousasi Never Occurred

UFC President Dana White continues to pursue two top MMA fighters who currently fight for the Strikeforce promotion, Fedor Emelianenko and Gegard Mousasi.  There were rumors on different mixed martial arts websites stating that the UFC and M-1 Global were in negotiations once again in order to sign up these two top contenders.  However, M-1 Global President Vadim Finkelstein denies talks with the UFC and instead he states that he is satisfied with the partnership they have with Strikeforce.

From Vadim Finkelstein:

“Today I heard the rumors of me allegedly stating on my twitter account that we are negotiating with the UFC. I want to state that there are no talks with the UFC whatsoever. Our partner in the USA is STRIKEFORCE, we are happy to cooperate with STRIKEFORCE. Fedor (Emelianenko) and Gegard (Mousasi) fight there and they are quite happy with the conditions and how they are treated with respect there. Finally, I don’t have any account on Twitter. The account that ignited the rumors is false. Our attorneys are already aware of the situation and shortly this fake account will be deleted.”
