The former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le is expected to return to the Strikeforce cage to face Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith as part of the December 19th main event. Le talks about his MMA return and responds to some of Jake Shields’ comments:
From Cung Le:
Share“Everything came together so fast…I wasn’t expecting to come back so soon. I had a (movie) project I was working on right now, but it got pushed back till next year, so I figured I’d have a couple months to get in shape. … I sat down with Scott and told him to give me two weeks. I called (American Kickboxing Academy trainer) Javier Mendez, and I started training. And after the first week, [Scott] goes, ‘How do you feel?’ I said, ‘Oh, I’m very sore.’ But the second week was a lot better, and now I have six more weeks to go. Ready or not, here I come… (In regards to Jake Shields’ comments] I’m actually honored that top fighters want to fight me…It means I’ve done something right and made a big impact in MMA. But right now, I take one fight at a time, and if I do well, I’ll look forward to what’s going to be next and who’s next. But right now, I need to make sure to get rid of this ring rust…I think Jake’s always looking to promote the next fight and things like that, so I don’t know.”
Jake Shields Says Cung Le Not Willing To Fight Him For The Strikeforce Title

Jake Shields was crowned with the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title after a 3-round battle with Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller this past Saturday night. Cung Le made an announcement earlier that night, stating that he had decided to return to the cage on December 19th.
Shields feels that Le has been continuously running away from him ever since he first called him out. Le is scheduled to take on Scott Smith as part of the upcoming Strikeforce ‘Evolution’ main event. A victory for Le may very well put him next in line to face Shields for the Strikeforce middleweight belt.
Snip from Jake Shields:
Share“Cung (Le) won’t fight me…That’s why he vacated the belt, obviously, and then fights a month later…[Why?] You’d have to ask Cung, he’s the one who vacated his belt and then decided to fight a month later.”

The Strikeforce ‘Evolution’ event has been scheduled to take place at the HP Pavilion arena in San Jose, California. This December 19th event will headline Cung Le vs. Scott ‘Hands of Steel’ Smith while the co-main event is expected to feature a must-see battle between two of the best grapplers in the world. Olympic Silver medalist Matt Lindland returns to the cage to face Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza.
Le had given up his Strikeforce middleweight belt in order to pursue a movie career. He has finally agreed to put his acting skills to the side, agreeing to return to the cage to do what he loves best- mixed martial arts. His goal is to get passed Smith in order to get a step closer to Shields who recently acquired the title after a unanimous decision win over Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller. As for Smith, he is looking to bounce back strong after losing to Nick Diaz in June earlier this year.
Tickets for the Showtime-broadcast event, which will go head-to-head with Zuffa, LLC’s “WEC 45: Cerrone vs. Ratcliff” event which go on sale next week. The Showtime event starts at just $30, are scheduled to go on sale to the general public at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Friday, Nov. 13, at Ticketmaster.com.
Here’s how the Strikeforce ‘Evolution’ fight card is shaping up:
- Cung Le vs. Scott Smith
- Matt Lindland vs. Ronald “Jacare” Souza
- Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. TBA
- Robbie Lawler vs. TBA
Cung Le Vacates Strikeforce Middleweight Title: “I Definitely Intend To Return”

The former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le (6-0) remains undefeated in mixed martial arts competition to this day. This week, he officially decided to vacate the 185-pound title in order to continue his movie career. Although he plans to return sometime down the road, he felt that giving up his belt was “the right thing to do” for the promotion.
From Cung Le:
Share“For me, potentially I have another project, and I know I’m not in fight shape right now, and I think I should vacate my title because it’s not fair to them who their livelihood is fighting for an interim title when I’m here running around making movies and doing something different. It does not mean that I’m retiring; I’m just doing it because I think it’s the right thing to do … because I’m not ready to step up in the next coming months and fight five-rounders. I definitely intend to return, and I know for a fact that I will return, but I can’t just jump back in and be able to go five rounds at peak level when I left (after) the fight with Frank (Shamrock).”
