Anderson Silva Reminds Demian Maia That His Fight At UFC 112 Is MMA, Not Jiu Jitsu

Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva was originally scheduled to face Vitor Belfort for the UFC middleweight title.  Due to a shoulder injury Belfort sustained not too long ago, Demian Maia was called in as a replacement to fight Silva as part of the upcoming UFC 112 main event in Abu Dhabi.

Maia is known for his expertise in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, acquiring 8 of his 12 wins via submission.  Silva is well aware of Maia’s dangerous ground game, but the current middleweight champion points out a very important aspect in this sport.  Silva vs. Maia will be a mixed martial arts bout, not a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu match.  Although Silva is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he continues to train both the ground game as well as his stand-up skills.

Again, anything can happen when it comes to MMA competition.

From Anderson Silva via Tatame.com:

“This isn’t jiu-jitsu, it’s MMA, a sport that involves many techniques and elements. It’s hard to say that I would beat him standing up and he would defeat me on the canvas. Logically, each one of us owns a specialty but a fight is always a fight. MMA is a new sport and there’s no precise gameplan so we keep training and studying. I’m going to study for the rest of my life. It has been going correctly but it can happen that I won’t give my best showing and it’s over. We’re training and if it’s God’s will to have me stay as champion, I’ll stay. I don’t feel pressure to fight with Demian or any other fighter in this division. I’m worried about how I’m training each day.”

Patrick Cote Wants Second Shot At Anderson Silva For UFC Middleweight Title

January 21, 2010 by admin

Patrick ‘The Predator’ Cote has just one thing on his mind, a rematch against Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva for the middleweight title.  In a recent interview, Cote talks in detail about his loss to Silva at UFC 90.  Unfortunately for the Canadian fighter, he blew out his knee within the first minute of the third round.  The referee had no other choice but to stop the fight and Cote can’t stop thinking about the opportunity he lost that night.

Cote hasn’t fought since  October of 2008, but he’s finally 100% recovered and ready to make his octagon return against Alan Belcher on May 8th at UFC 113.

From Patrick Cote:

“If I fight (Anderson Silva) again I think I am going to do the same thing, I think I learned that if you’re not scared of him right away you have a good chance to win and that’s what I did. I was there in the first second of the fight, I took the center of the Octagon and I showed him I wasn’t scared of him. This guy is not a machine; he is a human like me and you, so you have to believe in yourself. The worst part of fighting Anderson Silva is that it’s so hard finding training partners like him, nobody moves like him and nobody fights like him. So if I fight him again the surprise aspect of how he moves and how he fights is not going to be a surprise anymore, I know him and how it feels to be in the same Octagon with him, so that is going to be a huge advantage for me. I want big fights all the time. I don’t do this sport to be number 2, to be second, I want to be world champion — I think I have the ability to be world champion.”

Demian Maia: Vitor Belfort Is More Complete Physically and Technically Than Anderson Silva

January 20, 2010 by admin

UFC middleweight fighter Demian Maia shares his thoughts on the upcoming title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.  After intense training with Belfort, Maia explains how dangerous he can be in the octagon.  Maia truly believes that Belfort has the edge over Silva both physically and technically, but he’ll only be victorious if he is able to keep his mind focused 100% of the time during the fight.

Silva vs. Belfort is scheduled to take place on April 10th as part of the UFC 112 main event in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.  BJ Penn is also in the works for a lightweight title bout against Frankie Edgar as part of the co-main event.

From Demian Maia:

“This fight is a big mystery. Both trained boxing with [Luis] Dorea. I asked many people in the academy, and everybody tells me they can’t predict what’s going to happen. The consensus is that if Belfort explodes at the beginning, he has a chance for the knockout, but most people believe more in Anderson if the fight goes past the first round. That’s what I heard most people saying. I’ve never trained with Anderson, but I’ve already trained with Belfort, and I can say he is very complete and certainly one of the biggest talents ever in Brazilian MMA. His only weakness is his mind, but, lately, he hasn’t shown any psychological weakness. I think Belfort is more complete physically and technically than Anderson, but Anderson is always 100 percent psychologically. So, for sure, it’s an unpredictable fight.”

The current UFC 185-pound champion Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva will put his title on the line against no. 1 contender Vitor Belfort.  Silva has won his last 11 fights including 9 wins in the middleweight division and two as a light heavyweight.

As for Belfort, he has won five consecutive MMA bouts including one victory over Rich Franklin in his UFC return.  Immediately after his win over Franklin, Dana White announced an immediate title shot between Belfort and Silva.

The Silva vs. Belfort title bout was orginally scheduled for UFC 108 on January 2nd, but Silva was forced to postpone due to minor elbow surgery.  Their UFC middleweight fight has finally been confirmed for UFC 112, which is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on April 10th.  Belfort’s manager Fabiano Farah told media the exciting news earlier today.

Here’s how the UFC 112 fight card looks so far (fight card subject to change):

  • Champion Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort (for middleweight title)
  • Champion B.J. Penn vs. Frankie Edgar (for lightweight title)
  • Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie
  • Kendall Grove vs. TBA
